VISAS
Working Holidaymaker Scheme
Available to Commonwealth citizens aged between 17 and 30. The visa is valid for 2 years from the date of entry and you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself in the UK.

UK Ancestry
Applicants who have a grandparent that was born in the UK are eligible for an Ancestry visa. You are able to take or seek employment in the UK without requiring a Work Permit for a four-year period of stay, after which the applicant will be eligible to apply for an Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Right of Abode
The right of abode means that you are entirely free from UK immigration control; you do not need to get permission from an immigration officer to enter the UK and you can live and work in the UK without restriction. These are people who would have normally gained their citizenship by virtue of being born, adopted or naturalised in the UK.

British or EEC Passport
British or EEC passport holders have no restrictions to work in the UK.

Spouse
If you are the spouse of a British National you will be entitled to work in the UK without restriction.

For dependants:
If you are admitted to the UK, your spouse and children under 18 may be admitted to the UK with you, provided that they have an entry clearance for this purpose. Unmarried partners are also eligible to apply.

Highly Skilled Migrant Program
A new scheme designed to allow highly skilled people to migrate to the UK to look for work. Any Australian resident can apply and potential candidates are assessed on a point’s basis.

Work Permit Sponsorship
Teachers who are not covered by any of the above categories may be eligible to work in the UK on a sponsorship basis. Work permits are issued by Work Permits (UK), part of the Home Office's Immigration and Nationality Directorate. A work permit relates to a specific individual and a particular job.

Teaching is currently on the shortage occupation list for the UK. Applications for teacher Work Permits are provided following a successful job offer.

You cannot apply directly for a work permit. This has to be done on your behalf by an employer in the UK who wishes to employ you. They should submit the application at least 8 weeks in advance of the date they require you to start work. You will also need to ensure you allow sufficient time to meet the visa requirements once the work permit has been approved.
