TEACHING IN THE UK
Why choose to teach in the UK?
Firstly, there is nothing new about Australian teachers using their teaching skills to fund their UK experience. Teaching in UK schools provides an excellent source of income whilst at the same time providing ample opportunity to travel and explore what Europe has to offer.
London is at the centre of International travel and provides an ideal staging point for your
overseas adventure. Whether you are keen to explore the historic cities of Europe, or more distant
shores, you will have an excellent base from which to travel.
Schools in the UK are autonomous and can make their own staffing decisions. This means that teachers
are appointed on merit and can direct their careers free from the restrictions of governing bodies.
What teaching positions are available?
Teacher recruitment in UK schools continues to pose problems. In addition to needing teacher
resources to cover emergency and casual vacancies, schools also require contract and permanent
staff to meet their ongoing demands.
When can I expect to teach?
Essentially there is a constant demand for casual relief teachers year round. This is supplemented by a
demand for contract and permanent staff at the beginning of the academic year in September and the
start of term two in January.
Interviews for UK teaching contracts take place in October for contracts
commencing in the January term.
For teaching contracts commencing in September then May/June is when interviews
take place. It is essential for those teachers interested in contract positions
to submit their details prior to this time.
Where are the teaching vacancies?
The density of population within the Greater London area leads to a high demand for
teachers.
However, schools across the UK, particularly in the South East, constantly experience difficulties
in recruiting good teachers.
